Do I need to protect my hair before applying heat? And what do I use?

Seems like a straightforward question with a pretty straight forward response, right? Well, if this was the case, we would have more clients going to salons with less dry hair and broken split ends and overall healthier hair on the back of applying heat to their hair. We have seen it all, the broken ends, the burnt areas of hair which have changed in colour due to excessive heat use and little or no protection at all. In the same way regardless of skin type you must protect your skin from the sun with suncream, right? Same applies to your hair! Theres no hair type that can bear the heat more so than another. In fact, afro hair is scientifically the most delicate and brittle type of hair. This being said, it suggests that protection with careful use of protective products is a must!

Did you know the ends of your hair need sealing with the blow dryer after washing to avoid split ends? Another reason and part of the process in which your hair needs heat protection. When your hair is wet the ends of your hair strands open up so if you leave them wet you will get split ends even without using harsh heat such as straighteners on your hair. At Fusion Hair and Beauty we encourage all our clients whether leaving the salon with their natural curls using a diffuser to maintain your curls or stretching your hair with the blow dryer. Even if all you do is dry the ends you must you’re a heat protector.

Some clients say laziness kicks in or the need for speed to get done and out will impact the TLC they give to their hair. Do your hair a favour - Know yourself and be honest. If you struggle with maintaining your hair daily and skip the protective step of applying heat protection before blow drying or straightening, then maybe wearing your hair out isn’t the best suitable option for you. Daily schedules can have such a bearing on the time we have to do different things! We get it! So come along to Fusion Hair and Beauty and we will get you the best protective style done for you, so your hair is tucked away for some time, and you no longer need to worry about managing your hair and feeling guilty for not treating your hair as it needs.

At Fusion Hair and Beauty when styling hair that involves heat, we make sure heat protection is applied. Over the years we have heard many stories of how clients take care of their hair when styling at home and often clients don’t apply a heat protector before blow drying their hair and only apply protection when using straighteners. The blow dryer may not heat to the same intensity as the straighteners; however, it is still heat! Therefore, you should protect your hair even when blow drying. There is a wide variety of heat protectors available in the market. At Fusion Hair and Beauty, we use two different types of heat protection.

1) ORS Olive Oil Heat Spray

2) IC Fantasia Heat Protector Serum

Our favourite to use is the ORS Olive Oil spray as it is quite light and best of all, smells so good! If you wish to use the IC Fantasia Heat protector spray, then do so on the blow dry and not on the straighten as the serum is slightly heavier in consistency and greasier which is not what we want our hair to look like after a fresh wash! You can use the same heat protector for both steps, blow drying and straightening, there’s no need to switch it up if you don’t wish to. Although, there’s no harm in trying both to see which you like best!

Those of you with a Keratin Treatment in your hair – stay away from the serum! As the serum is quite heavy this can affect the sleek finish straighten you have, causing it to frizz.

Remember! Any appliance that gives out heat requires heat protection! A couple sprays that will go a long way to maintaining healthy lasting hair.
