4 Kinky Hair Tools Every Natural Newbie Should Own

So, you're about to take the big plunge. Out with the weave, and in with the natural. What you probably don't realise yet is that along with the new hair, your hair toolkit will also need an upgrade. To get you started, here are four crucial tools you need to pick up quickly.

1. WIDE TOOTH COMB

Once you hair gets any longer than an inch, you'll probably find that those good old rat tail combs just won't do the job any more (half your hair will ends up in the sink!). A wide tooth comb on the other hand will kill those difficult knots and prevent curls from springing back and detangling. I'd recommend the Quidad Double Detangling Comb. It's a little pricey at £20 but consider this and investment. It'll make your life so much easier.

2. SPRITZ BOTTLE

Natural hair loves water. Whether detangling, or styling, a little water alongside your new wide tooth comb will help you work wonders with your hair.

You can pick up spray bottle's pretty much anywhere; they go for a little as £1.39 on Amazon.

3. HAIR CLIPS

If you've undergone the big chop and have a teeny weeny fro, then this won't apply for some time. However, if you've decided to transition, or have natural hair longer than 3 inches, hair clips are a necessity. Tackling those curls can be a challenge, breaking them down into sections makes them a little easier to work with.

Again, you can pick these up anywhere but a word of warning: cheap ones often slip off, rust, break, and pull at your roots. If you're prepared to invest, consider these double hinged Croc Clips. They don't rust, they're made of rubber and so don't slip. They're perfect for dense coily hair. You can buy these on Amazon for £5.50.

4. PLASTIC CAPS (...OR OLD TESCO BAGS)

Deep conditioning is going to be coming a regular thing for you natural newbies. Plastic caps help you with this in two ways: they hold in the the moisture in your hair; they also help to hold in your body heat, which in turn helps your hair absorb slightly more of the nutrients. Deep condition without a cap and your hair just won't feel anywhere as supple.

A year ago, I would have recommended you just keep and use your old carrier bags, but since the government introduced the 5p carrier bag charge the super-markets seem to have upgraded to these huge re-uasble plastic bags that are just a bit too big for what we need. Get a 100 online from Amazon for £6.99.
