Protecting your hair this Winter

As the cold weather approaches many of us think about how to best look after our hair. Afro hair is delicate and requires special TLC so this Winter there are a few tips that can help maintain healthy, vibrant hair.

·       Use protective styles – keeping your hair tucked away in natural protective styles or braids with extensions will help keep your hair healthy as the cold air will dry out your hair which can result in breakage. But remember! Do not leave your protective style in for longer than recommended as doing this will cause unhealthy damage to your natural hair.

A couple options of Protective Styles to go for this Winter

·       Box Braids – this style is versatile allowing you to have long braids and still style into different looks. Box braids shouldn’t stay in for longer than 10-12 weeks, so be sure to book in for your removal to ensure the hair is taken out properly without damaging your natural hair and to finish, get our Keracare Treatment to deep condition the hair after having been tucked away for some time as well as a trim to get rid of those dry ends that have been exposed and forgotten about whilst sat in braids.

·       Natural cornrows or twists – These styles are a great choice for those who don’t wish to carry extensions on their heads, but allows them to have their hair protected from being out and handling daily manipulation through use of products and brushing. Natural styles such as these tend to last up to 4 weeks but should be removed once they begin to matte or have fast growth. Each person is different depending on how their hair grows and how you look after your hair. Therefore, observing this is important to ensure you don’t damage your hair by leaving it in longer than needed.

·       Get regular treatments – keeping up with treatments is important to ensure your hair gets the required nutrients during the colder season.

·       Protect your hair around central heating – your hair naturally needs moisture; central heating will strip out the moisture in your hair so when you’re home keep your hair moisturised and covered to lock it in.

·       Headwear – as for the choice of hats, please stay away from knitted hats as these will drain out any moisture from your hair which causes dryness and can matte your hair to an unhealthy state which then becomes difficult to manage.

Love your hair enough to understand the needs of your hair change as the seasons change too.

How do I keep my hair extra-hydrated in the winter?

During the Winter you may find you need to add a little extra hydration to your hair. Choose leave-in conditioners that have effective and lasting ingredients.

Ingredients to look out for in your hair products this season:

  • Avocado

  • Mango

  • Almond

  • Honey

These ingredients are great for adding that deep conditioning to your hair which will help it breathe when exposed to cold air outside and then central heating when you’re indoors.

At Fusion Hair and Beauty we provide our clients with the perfect deep conditioning treatment called the Keracare Treatment. This includes an Intensive Restorative Masque and we blend a variety of ingredients and calculate the amount of each ingredient to cater to the clients personal needs for their hair and scalp condition. For this treatment to be effective it is advised that clients keep up with a regular routine of treatments every 6-8 weeks. By doing this our clients have noticed visible benefits to their hair as well as the overall feel of the condition of their hair. This treatment tackles heat damaged hair, breakage, and chemically treated hair. Giving back the nutrients your hair need through this treatment will restore the hair to a healthy state.

Book today and begin your healthy hair journey.

One ingredient to stay away from during the colder season is Coconut oil as this naturally solidifies in the cold air which could potentially block the pores on your scalp which will cause dehydration! Something we do not want our afro hair to feel!

With this said, get inspired with an alternative look this Winter by exploring a new protective style and invest in a new product that has the right ingredients to moisture and seal your hair which will help your hair maintain its Afro Elegance.
